Preplo by Nano Soft

Preplo turns cooking videos into recipes you can cook

Preplo is an iPhone app that turns a cooking video from YouTube, TikTok or Instagram into a recipe you can cook from: ingredients, steps linked to the video, costs and nutrition. Nano Soft built it for RevenueCat's Shipyard: Creator Contest 2026, where it won its brief, and launched it on the App Store in March 2026.

Challenge

Cooking videos inspire, but they are hard to cook from

People save cooking videos and rarely cook them. Short videos are good at inspiration and bad at instructions: quantities flash past, steps get skipped, and cooking from one means pausing, rewinding and guessing.

The contest brief came from a cooking creator and named this gap: help people go from "I saw this" to "it's on the table". RevenueCat gave builders four weeks to build, launch and monetize a working app.

Two things made it hard to build. YouTube, TikTok and Instagram expose recipes in different ways, and some block cloud servers. And early AI output was not safe to cook from: missing ingredients, invented quantities, the wrong language. A recipe you cannot trust is a recipe nobody cooks.

Approach

Make the AI output safe to cook from

We started from the moment the app has to serve: a saved video, a kitchen, messy hands. Then we cut scope hard. Meal planning, social feeds and community stayed out of the contest build so the core could be polished.

The model was the easy part. Making its output trustworthy was the work. We put a validation layer around it: strict output rules, unit standardization, translation and detection of videos that are not recipes. If a video has no recipe, Preplo says so instead of inventing one.

We designed the running costs up front. Every extraction is cached, so the same video is never analyzed twice, and recipe changes are cached too. Subscriptions, a free trial and premium access were in from day one, as the contest required.

  • Validate every answer

A layer of rules around the model checks quantities, units and language, and rejects videos that hold no recipe.

  • Cache once, serve everyone

Each video and each recipe change is processed once and cached, so the next person gets it instantly without a new model call.

  • Test cook mode while cooking

Cook mode went through three redesigns, because text that read fine at a desk was unreadable at arm's length.

  • Changes rewrite the whole recipe

A change such as vegan or spicy rewrites the dish, then recalculates ingredients, steps, cost and nutrition.

What we built

From a saved video to dinner

One paste box in, a full recipe out, plus the tools that get it onto the table. We built the app, the extraction service behind it and a site made for search and AI engines.

  • Video to recipe

Paste a YouTube, TikTok or Instagram link and get ingredients, quantities, steps, costs and nutrition.

  • Steps linked to the video

Each step jumps to the moment in the video where it happens, so you can watch the technique.

  • One-tap recipe changes

Vegan, spicy, dairy-free or low-carb: the whole recipe is rewritten, including cost and nutrition.

  • Guided cook mode

Large text, steps read aloud, timers and a screen that stays awake while you cook.

  • Smart shopping lists

Lists grouped by aisle with price estimates, merging several recipes into one trip.

  • Weekly cooking streaks

Streaks with tiers, freezes and friends, counted weekly so the habit never feels like a chore.

Outcome

One of seven winners, then live on the App Store

Preplo won its creator brief at RevenueCat Shipyard: Creator Contest 2026, one of seven winning apps in a contest where more than 900 builders competed. RevenueCat announced the winners on 26 February 2026.

We shipped Preplo to the App Store on 16 March 2026, about five weeks after the contest deadline. It is live today with paid plans and free trials. Android is coming soon.

After the contest we kept building: friends joined the weekly streaks, and a one-time lifetime plan sits beside the subscriptions.
